Would you like to introduce the Frowning Clouds?
Well, The Frowning Clouds are five youngens from Australia who play mid 60s Garage and R&B with all their heart. With a deep profound love for the 60s era Rolling Stones, we do understand that we are repeating something that's been done once before, but we don't see it as a problem, and for those of you who do, and don't stop hounding us about it, your loss!
How did you get your name?
It's from an old Moody Blues record titled 'Days Of The Future Passed'. There's a line in a song which reads, 'when the sun goes down, and the clouds all frown'.
Tell us about your 7" at Monterrey Records. How did an Australian band get with a Spanish label?
We had recorded these three tracks about 2 years ago now, they were originally to be released on a label called 'Stained Circles', but they lost money and we were slack on getting the artwork together. Then a few months ago, the guitar player of a Spanish group called 'The Phantom Keys' had contacted us to tell us about a label one of his other bands were on, and that they were interested in our 7 inch. We got in touch and it was made!
When will you release your first LP and on which label?
Our first LP will be Feburary/March 2010 on a Melbourne indie label called 'Off The Hip'.
You have a fantastic pure 60's sound. How do you get that sound?
Thank you very much! When we started we had no idea how to get any sort of sound, we just plugged in and went at it. Now days we owe it all to our Guitars and The Rolling Stones' 60s catalogue, Back From The Grave and 'I Love Her Still' by The Poets on repeat.
What is your inspiration?
ANY and EVERY mid 60s american teenager who started a band with his friends and thought they were going to be bigger than the Beatles...and the Rolling Stones.
What instruments do you use?
I use a 1967 Hofner 4575 through a 50th anniversary Vox AC30, the other rhythm guitarist uses a Harmony Rocket reissue, our lead guitarist plays a late 60s Teisco Del Ray and an Epiphone Dot. Our Bass player plays a Hollowbody Ibanez Bass and our drummer plays a Tama kit.
Are you vinyl collectors? What do you think of the vinyl comeback? Personally I think that Cd is dying and people will either listen to vinyl or digital. What do you think?
We do all enjoy listening to Vinyl quite a lot, I espeacially enjoy 45s. Just getting them all out and reading all the labels and all that. Havin' said that, I'm not a vinyl 'purist' or anything, its just a peice of plastic. I dont care how I hear the song, as long as I hear it ya know.
What are you listening to right now?
Sienfield! haha. Music wise I've just got all the Teenage Shutdowns 1-15, so I've been getting into them a fair bit, this compilation called 'Total Raunch', this early 60s Melbourne band called 'The Chimney Sweeps' and 'The Black Lips' earlier albums.
What do you do when not playing with the band?
Thinking about the band, or girls.
Anything else you'd like to add?
NOPE!
