Three 7" on three different labels at the same time. What's the deal?
Our previous records got distributed in the States, and got attention and good reviews from there, but we never really had an official US release. With an upcoming American tour, it was time to do it.
We received different requests from good labels over there (Douchemaster, Big Neck and Hell Yes!), and we already had all the songs recorded (or in the process), as Matt owns an analog recording studio, the Outside Inside in Montebelluna (TV), giving us the opportunity to work costantly in new material.
How did your tour go? Any interesting stories?
The tour went well. We travelled from Austin TX across all the west coast. Up to Seattle WA, and then back down to Milwaukee. We were with JAIL, a cool garage-pop band with some indie influences from Milwaukee (two of those guys are in Goodnight Loving, too) so they helped us with everything. We had a really good time with them. Touring the US is hard. Really hard sometimes. You must forget everything you learned from touring Europe, and start all over again, with different laws. But, in this way, it's a sort of totally new adventure. Sometimes you sleep on the floor for three night in a row, you play every kind of places (one day a cool club, the other a diner, then a clothes shop...), you eat fat breakfasts and junk food almost everyday...
And the landscapes...those are certainly one of the most incredible things about USA...
Anyway, some shows were so and so, but some had been really great, as the ones in Austin TX, Milwaukee and the Scion Garage Fest, of course.
Tell us about the Scion Garage Fest.
It has been a really incredible (and probably unique) event. All those bands from all over the world got flew to Portland for one gig only. If you like Garage-Punk, you had to be there, as all the bands you could like were there. It was a sort of "high-school-reunion" in some way...you meet those people/bands during your previous tours, and then you find them all in one place, for one day.
Oh, and we all sleep in the same (fancy) hotel...you can imagine the afterparties...
What are your plans now?
Play some shows in Italy, probably another European tour in the spring (with a very special guest) and mainly concentrate on the new album. We would love to record it as soon as possible. And probably release it by ouselves this time, with the help of Wild Honey Records. We will write, record, produce, mix, design, release and distribute the record by ousrselves. A total D.I.Y. release...
How can two persons make so much noise?
Energy, tons of shows, good gear and alchemy between us. You don't need a string session to build up a wall of sound...
The White Stripes were credited for being a duo, but there were more and better duos over the years. Do you have any favourite two person bands?
Well, we don't really think in therms of "two men band", or "three men band", etc...there are only good and bad bands, it doesn't matter how many persons are in the band.
Anyway, probably the King Khan and BBQ Show is still one of the best garage-punk bands around, with a really specific and personal sound.
Your sound is unique, how did you manage to blend all those influences so successfully?
We love records. And we love different genres of music and styles too.
Starting, of course, from the basics (blues, roots music, jazz, 60's, 70's punk, etc...)
It's a mess for our wallets, but listening to a lot of good stuff give you more inspirations and ideas.
You can't really invent anything new nowadays, so the best you can try to do is combine all your influences in a fresh (and so modern) sound. That's what we try to do.
What are you listening to these days?
Tons of Jazz, Delta-Blues, and of course the Kinks. You can never get tired of the Kinks!
You have a nice collection of instruments. Are you collectors and is vintage the way to go?
We (unfortunately) aren't so rich to be collectors...
But yeah, we've got some good vintage gear, coz it surely sound better than the new crap...
Anything else you'd like to add?
Buy good records! And thank you so much to you for the interview, and to YOU for reading it.
The Mojomatics really cool photos are by A. Campanella!
