Congratulations for your your new record! It's fantastic! Would you like to talk about it?
It always takes us years to release an album ! When we recorded the first one, it's been out three years later ! It's about the same for this one and for different reasons.
This recording sounds quite different as the first one. Less garage, ..more beat. We're also very happy with what Jon Von and Pozzo did with it. We're quite lucky with our sound engineers !
The songs are very "Terribles", still ; covers and originals.
A single is beeing released at the moment , with a japanese version of "Everything's alright" that Rudie wrote with her very few japanese vocabulary she has ! And the other song is a different version of "Ne Joue Pas Avec Mon Coeur", that Fred wrote.
Let's hope we won't have to wait three years before we see it !
What's going on in France? There's a lot of Garage and Beat action with many groups francophones or not. Do they put something in the water?
Oh, really ? I don't know about that !
What I've seen very recently, is a lot of bands of teenagers doing a sort of dandy rock'n'roll, as I would call it ! Classy, sophisticated, delicate but, quite punky.
The biggest number of bands I've seen playing garage or beat, those days, were from Mexico, Brazil, ...well, south America basically. And they sound amazingly authentic !
European bands seem to be more into punk and electro nowadays..
Which isn't really my cup of Jägermeister !
How was the collaboration with King Khan? How did it happen?
There's a long time we're friends and it was in the air for quite a while ! We had met when Arish was doing The Space Shits, years ago. Then, we had played various gigs and festivals whith King Khan all over the place and several times we'd mention that we had to record together. It started with a song of King Kahn that we recorded in ten minutes in Arish's place as we were in Berlin. It's been great fun to do that ! The drum-kit was a kid's one and we did the lyrics as we recorded the song. King Kahn does play this song, it's called Je Suis Le Fils De Jacques Dutronc.
For the two songs with Arish on the album, it happened exactly the same way, except that it was in Paris as King Kahn was in tour in France.
Arish picked me out from school (I'm a teacher !) in front of the Opera, we jumped on a bus, got to Nicus's, got drunk, made lyrics in two minutes (for Nager) and closed ourselves in Nicus's cupboard to record our two voices together on the same microphone ! It was just great !! ...the result too !! Isn't it ?
Who chooses the songs you'll play and how do you rewrite the lyrics in French?
When it comes to covers, each of us is always a big fan of such or such song that we might ending on covering. But at the end of the day, looking at the play-list, Rudie has chosen most of them. C'est Fini, Ne Le Déçois Pas, Pourquoi Je Pleure, Ne T'en Va Pas, ...etc, yes, most of them. Which makes sense, as the singer, she wants to feel good with what she sings. There's quite a bunch of songs that she picked up that we didn't do, though ! ...Like reaching the high pitch of a Hollies number for example ! Especially as she wants backing vocals everywhere ! For the lyrics, she writes her own. She doesn't translate from the originals. She writes about what happens to her, in a 60's way of telling things ! No metaphores, no poetry ! Straight forward stuff !
When Fred makes a song, he writes his lyrics too.
Where do you get all those cool clothes? Are you full time mods or just onstage?
Our clothes ??
No, they're not stage outfits ! When you look back at the 60's, estheticly-talking, that was a great time ! Clothes-wise, but also, the furniture, the cars, the music, the cinema, architecture, hair-cuts !! ...well, everything ! So, in the everyday life, in 2009, that's how we live ! Fred and I are teachers and life's too short to be dressed like a sad fucker ! My students love that too and do the same now !
What are your favourites artists, French or not?
We all listen to different things... Fred is a human-jukebox and listens to everything. Nicus is a punk, Iwan is into garage, beat, oï, punk, electro, ..well, he's got a record-shop and he's also spinning records at parties, Gitan is a psychedelic animal and I must admit I'm well stuck in the 60's even if it still happens to me to shake on the Buzzcocks or the Damned.
What do you think of the Garage scene nowdays?
As I said before, I think the garage scene has never been so interesting than now, strangely enough ! I've seen bands with kids aged 16 or 17, doing fantastic garage, sounding so authentic it gave me the shivers ! they're really cool ! Have you ever seen Os Haxixins from Brazil ? Or, Los Explosivos from Mexico ? .. They're just kids ! And they love it and do it so much better than some head-lining they played with and that I won't mention the names !!
Are vintage instruments important to your sound and image?
It's not a question of image, although they certainly look better than the bad-taste crap beeing sold for a while now, but, using proper instruments to play what we play is definitly a necessity ! It just sounds proper ! You're Greek, aren't you ? Would you cook your lamb in a Tefal pan ?
What are your plans for the future?
The future is today. The new album is out, which means gigs and fun in different parts of the world with new cool people to meet and dance with ! ...that's about it !
Anything else you'd like to add?
Oh yes, .. we've never been to Greece ! Any idea ?
